2025 Rug Hooking Event in Maine
Come join the fun at the Spring Has Sprung Hook-In & 1-Day Workshops. 5 Workshops will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Elk’s Lodge, 108 Odlin Road, Bangor, Maine, followed by Hook-Ins on Saturday & Sunday, April 26 & 27, 2025. Event runs 9-3:30 each day.
Hook-In fee: $40/day (Snacks, beverages & lunch will be provided)
Workshop fee: $75 plus class supplies. See class descriptions for details (Workshop fee also includes snacks, beverages & lunch)

Cancellation policy: Workshop & Hook-In reservations are NOT TRANSFERABLE without contacting Hooked Forever. Cancellations after April 5th, 2025 will not be refunded. If a class does not draw a minimum number of students we may be forced to cancel the class & all fees will be refunded.

Raised Pumpkin Punchneedle (Waiting List)

Workshop Fee: $75 – Due on registration

Skill level: Students must have basic Punch Needle Rug Hooking knowledge or experience.
Class Description:
Jump-start your fall projects, create a dimensional Pumpkin cushion or mat using the Oxford Punch Needle! We will be using all 5 “Fine” Oxford Punch Needles to sculpt your pumpkin without having to clip your loops. This will cause a gradual elevation to your pumpkin sections. You will also be using 5 values of Hand Dyed Orange to enhance the sculpting appearance of your pumpkin. This workshop is geared to expand you’re your abilities and visions going forward.
All students will punch needle the same pattern as shown. The finished size of the project measures 12”x12” and is on a 24”x24” piece of Monk’s Cloth so that you may add to your piece at home. We will be using 100% wool, Briggs & Little, 2 ply yarn “Heritage”. All yarns will be As Is colors from Briggs & Little as well as Hand Dyed. Kevin will be providing, for use during the workshop or for purchase, a 15”x15” Gripper Frame and Oxford Punch Needles in the Fine Needle sizes of #08, # 09, #10, #13 and #14 for all students.

Kit Description: Each Kit will include the pattern on a 24”x24” piece of Monk’s Cloth and all yarns needed to complete the project. Oxford Punch Needles and Gripper Frames are NOT included in the Kits but will be available to use or purchase during the workshop.

Bio:
Kevin was born and raised in small town Amherst, Nova Scotia and is now settled in Shemogue, New Brunswick, Canada. He started his arts path in his early teens with Oil Painting, to be followed by Tole Painting which he successfully taught for 5 years. After many forays in the Fiber Arts, including Punch Needle Embroidery, Cross Stitch, Needlepoint and Latch Hook, Kevin was introduced to Traditional Rug Hooking by his Mother. Kevin has evolved into Punch Needle Rug Hooking where he has found great peace and relaxation in using the Amy Oxford Punch Needle. He is a Certified Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor and is offering classes throughout the area and is excited to spread the joy of Punch Needle Rug Hooking. In 2020 Kevin built his 400 sq. ft. Studio where he offers Punch Needle Rug Hooking classes as well as sell basic supplies for both Traditional Rug Hooking and Punch Needle Rug Hooking. Kevin has also enjoyed traveling to teach the art of Punch Needle Rug Hooking throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ohio, Maine and has become a annual instructor at The Hooked Rug Museum of North America in Hubbards, Nova Scotia.

Cherylyn Brubaker – Hooked Treasures, ME

Class Description: Students will select one of four patterns: A raven, snowy owl, bunny or fox.
These will be provided by Cherylyn.
Do you lack confidence when hooking animals? In this class we will cover the basics to include
hooking an animal that is white or black. Instruction will cover how to hook fur or feathers,
animal/bird eyes and faces and bodies. Should we incorporate yarns or other fibers in our piece?
Although the patterns will not require a fine cut, there will be some fine details.

Bio: Cherylyn is the owner of Hooked Treasures in Brunswick, ME and has been rug hooking since
1994. She designs rug patterns, teaches workshops and hand dyes wool. Other passions include
cycling, running and knitting. She is a member of the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia Teachers
Branch and McGown Guild. Her work has appeared in Rug Hooking Celebrations and she is an
article contributor as well.

Bio: Toni Philbrick is the owner of The Keeping Room in Hampden, ME. She began rug hooking 50 years ago and it continues to be her passion. She started her business in 1980, as Country Flowers and Accents, growing and drying flowers. That led to making lampshades and then carrying antiques. After many years in group shops, she opened her own shop in 2010, where she can work, create, teach, display and sell. A prolific designer, she has designed hundreds of rug hooking and wool applique patterns. Her hooking style is refined primitive, using a wide cut, and her teaching method is hands on- when anyone needs help. She hopes you will join her class!

Scrolls
Sandy Ferguson – Caribou, ME
Time: 9-3:00
Workshop Fee: $75 – Due on registration
Supply Fee: To be determined. Payable to teacher the day of class.
Class Description: Students will select one of two patterns as pictured provided by Sandy or bring their own pattern with scrolls in it. Patterns are suitable for #3 to #5 cut.
Class discussion will include different types of scrolls, where they are used, and how to hook them with dip dyes and swatches.

Bio:
Sandy was born in Caribou to a very crafty family. Her mother taught her to sew her own clothes, her maternal grandmother taught her to knit, weave and tat. Other relatives knitted, crocheted, stenciled, quilted and sewed. Christmas time always brought a few new outfits for Barbie created by these wonderful ladies with inspiration from the Sears catalog. Years later, both Sandy and her mom did craft fairs and became Creative Circle representatives and taught many of these skills.
Sandy moved to Bangor in 1974 for school and work. She met Stacey Van Dyne via Stacey’s husband, Pat, in 2012 who introduced her to rug hooking. That has been her major passion ever since. She started the McGown certification program in 2014, was certified in 2018 and continues to attend the workshop to broaden her skills. She is currently the Vice President for the board at McGown workshop and a member-at-large of ATHA.

Lisa Chaloner – Ocean Park, ME

Supply Fee: Cost will vary depending on pattern & materials chosen. Payable to the teacher at the beginning of class.
Class Description: Do you have a confusing mess of leftover wool bits and worms? Are you constantly torn between throwing it all away and saving it “just in case”? In “Upcycled Color” we will begin to tame the leftovers and get them sorted for use in a completely new project with a spectacular color plan! We will work toward developing confidence when color planning our rugs. We will also practice using color and value tools as guides for our work. And best of all, we will have fun together!

Supply/Kit Description:
Students Need To Bring: Rug frame, hook, scissors,
Assorted leftover bits of wool, including worms and other small pieces
Your favorite color wheel or another color tool (I will have my favorites available as well)
Spare backing fabric, with a 12” x 12” workspace, or a small pattern of your own choosing.
Sharpie marker or another type of permanent marker.
Bio: Lisa Chaloner began hooking in 1991 and completed the McGown Teacher Certification process in 2009. Lisa has taught weekly and bi monthly private classes for over a decade, welcoming all hooking levels and skill abilities. She has also taught classes at the Northern McGown Teachers’ Workshop, Sauder Village Rug Week, Sebago Lake Rug School, Country Inn Rug School, and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen/Nashua. Lisa has taken part in the Eye See You II Project in 2012, the Tarot Card Exhibition, in 2015, the Moment in Time Project, which opened in 2021, and the Fairy Tale Project, which opened in July of 2022. When she is not hooking, Lisa enjoys living on the Maine Coast with her husband and several pets.
